2 Samuel Chapter 1 Summary
2 Samuel Chapter 1 opens shortly after David returns from defeating the Amalekites. On the third day, a young Amalekite man arrives from Saul’s camp with torn clothes and dirt on his head, signs of mourning and tragedy.
The Amalekite tells David that Israel has been defeated by the Philistines and that Saul and Jonathan are dead. He claims that he found Saul severely wounded on Mount Gilboa and that Saul asked him to kill him to end his suffering. The Amalekite says he obeyed and then brought Saul’s crown and bracelet to David.
David and his men are deeply grieved by the news. They mourn, weep, and fast until evening for Saul, Jonathan, the people of Israel, and the army of the Lord because so many had fallen in battle.
David then questions the Amalekite further. When the man admits that he killed Saul, David orders his execution. David explains that the Amalekite condemned himself by claiming to destroy the Lord’s anointed king.
Afterward, David composes a funeral song known as “The Song of the Bow” to honor Saul and Jonathan. He commands that the song be taught throughout Judah. In the lament, David praises Saul and Jonathan for their bravery, strength, and leadership in battle.
David especially mourns Jonathan, his close friend. He expresses deep sorrow over Jonathan’s death and remembers the strong bond of friendship they shared. David declares that Jonathan’s love and loyalty were wonderful and precious to him.
