1 Samuel Chapter 4 Summary
Israel goes out to battle against the Philistines and camps near Ebenezer, while the Philistines camp at Aphek. During the battle, Israel is defeated, and about four thousand men are killed.
Confused by their defeat, the elders of Israel ask why the Lord allowed the Philistines to overcome them. Instead of humbling themselves and seeking God’s guidance, they decide to bring the Ark of the Covenant from Shiloh into the camp. They believe that the presence of the Ark will automatically save them from their enemies.
Hophni and Phinehas, the corrupt sons of Eli, accompany the Ark. When it arrives in the Israelite camp, the people shout so loudly that the ground shakes. The Philistines become afraid when they learn that the Ark has entered the camp, remembering the mighty works God performed against Egypt. Nevertheless, they encourage one another to fight courageously.
The Philistines attack and win a crushing victory. Thirty thousand Israelite soldiers are killed, Hophni and Phinehas die, and the Ark of the Covenant is captured.
A messenger runs from the battlefield to Shiloh and reports the disaster. Eli, now ninety-eight years old and nearly blind, is especially concerned about the Ark. When he hears that the Ark has been captured, he falls backward from his seat, breaks his neck, and dies after judging Israel for forty years.
Phinehas’s pregnant wife hears that the Ark has been captured and that her husband and father-in-law are dead. She goes into labor and gives birth to a son. Before dying, she names him Ichabod, declaring that the glory has departed from Israel because the Ark of God has been captured.
