Judges Chapter 1 describes Israel’s continued efforts to take possession of the Promised Land after the death of Joshua. The chapter records victories, battles, and failures as different tribes attempt to drive out the remaining Canaanite nations. It reveals both the power of God in giving victory and the dangers of incomplete obedience.
Judges Chapter 1 Summary
Judges Chapter 1 begins after the death of Joshua when the Israelites seek guidance from the Lord about which tribe should lead the battle against the Canaanites. God chooses the tribe of Judah to go first, promising to deliver the land into their hands.
The tribe of Judah joins with the tribe of Simeon to fight the Canaanites and Perizzites. God gives them victory in battle, and they defeat many enemies, including King Adoni-bezek. After capturing him, they cut off his thumbs and big toes, just as he had done to other kings in the past. Adoni-bezek admits that God has repaid him for his cruelty.
Judah continues conquering several cities, including Jerusalem, Hebron, and Debir. Caleb promises his daughter Achsah in marriage to whoever captures the city of Debir. Othniel succeeds in taking the city and becomes Achsah’s husband. Achsah later asks her father for springs of water, and Caleb blesses her request.
Although some tribes experience success, the chapter also reveals growing problems. Many tribes fail to completely drive out the Canaanites from the land. Instead, they allow some of the inhabitants to remain among them, often forcing them into labor instead of removing them completely as God commanded.
The tribes of Benjamin, Manasseh, Ephraim, Zebulun, Asher, Naphtali, and Dan all struggle to fully possess their territories. In some places, the Canaanites remain strong and influence the Israelites. The tribe of Dan is even forced into the hill country because of enemy resistance.
Judges Chapter 1 shows both victory and compromise. While God gave Israel success when they trusted and obeyed Him, incomplete obedience led to future spiritual problems and conflict. The chapter prepares the reader for the repeated cycle of sin, oppression, repentance, and deliverance that fills the rest of the book of Judges.
