Nehemiah Chapter 4 records the intense opposition that arises as the Jews rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. Mockery soon escalates into threats of violence as Israel’s enemies attempt to stop the work. Rather than surrender to fear, Nehemiah responds with prayer, wisdom, and practical leadership. He encourages the people to trust in God while remaining prepared to defend themselves. Nehemiah Chapter 4 Summary
As the rebuilding of Jerusalem’s walls progresses, Sanballat becomes furious and openly mocks the Jewish builders. Along with Tobiah and other enemies, he ridicules their efforts, claiming that even a fox could knock down the walls they are constructing.
Nehemiah responds by praying that God would see the insults directed against His people and deal justly with their enemies. Rather than becoming discouraged, the people continue working with determination until the wall reaches half its intended height because the people remain fully committed to the task.
When Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabs, the Ammonites, and the people of Ashdod realize that the work continues despite their ridicule, they unite and plot to attack Jerusalem and create confusion among the builders.
Again, Nehemiah leads the people in prayer while also taking practical action. Guards are stationed day and night to watch for enemy attacks. As fear spreads among some of the workers, Nehemiah gathers the people and reminds them not to fear their enemies but to remember the greatness and power of the Lord.
Families are positioned together along vulnerable sections of the wall with swords, spears, and bows. From that point forward, half of the workers continue building while the other half stand armed to protect the city. Even the builders carry weapons while they work.
Nehemiah also establishes a warning system. A trumpeter remains beside him so that if an attack occurs, the trumpet can summon everyone to defend the city. He confidently assures the people, “Our God will fight for us.”
The builders work tirelessly from dawn until the stars appear. At night, many remain inside Jerusalem to guard the city while continuing construction the next day. Neither Nehemiah nor his companions remove their clothing except when washing, remaining constantly prepared for any attack.
Despite persistent opposition and threats, God’s people continue rebuilding the wall with courage, unity, wisdom, and unwavering faith.
