Ezekiel Chapter 1 begins in the fifth year of King Jehoiachin’s captivity while Ezekiel is living among the Jewish exiles by the River Chebar in Babylon. The heavens open, and Ezekiel receives visions from God.
As he looks, he sees a great storm coming from the north. A massive cloud filled with flashing fire and brilliant light approaches. Within the fire appears something shining like glowing metal, revealing the overwhelming majesty of God’s presence.
From the midst of the cloud emerge four living creatures. Each creature has a human form but possesses four faces: the face of a man, a lion, an ox, and an eagle. They also have four wings. Their appearance is radiant like burning coals of fire and flashes of lightning move among them. The creatures move with incredible speed and power, always going straight forward without turning.
Beside each living creature is a remarkable wheel. The wheels appear as though one wheel is intersecting another, allowing movement in any direction. The rims of the wheels are full of eyes all around, symbolizing perfect awareness and knowledge. Wherever the living creatures move, the wheels move with them because the same spirit directs both.
Above the creatures is an expanse that shines like crystal. Above the expanse is a magnificent throne resembling sapphire stone. Seated upon the throne is a figure with the appearance of a man. From His waist upward and downward shines a brilliant radiance like glowing fire surrounded by dazzling light.
Ezekiel describes the glory surrounding the throne as resembling a rainbow in the clouds after rain. The vision reveals the majesty, holiness, and sovereignty of God.
Overwhelmed by what he sees, Ezekiel falls facedown before the Lord. The chapter concludes as he prepares to receive God’s commission as a prophet.
