Numbers Chapter 6 introduces the Nazirite vow, a special voluntary commitment through which an Israelite could dedicate himself or herself to the Lord for a specific period of time. Numbers Chapter 6 Summary
Numbers 6 begins with God instructing Moses concerning men or women who voluntarily make a special Nazirite vow to dedicate themselves to the Lord.
During the period of the vow, the Nazirite must abstain from wine, fermented drink, grape juice, grapes, raisins, and anything produced from the grapevine. This outward restriction represents the individual’s special period of separation to God.
The Nazirite must also allow the hair of the head to grow without being cut throughout the duration of the vow. The uncut hair becomes a visible sign of consecration to the Lord.
A third requirement concerns contact with the dead. Nazirites are forbidden from approaching a dead body during the period of dedication, even if the deceased is a close family member. If someone unexpectedly dies near a Nazirite and causes ceremonial defilement, specific purification procedures and sacrifices are required, and the previous period of dedication must begin again.
When the appointed time of the vow is completed, the Nazirite comes to the entrance of the Tabernacle and presents the required sacrifices. These include a burnt offering, sin offering, peace offering, grain offering, and drink offerings.
The Nazirite then shaves the consecrated hair and places it in the fire associated with the peace offering. After the priest completes the prescribed ceremonies, the period of the Nazirite vow officially ends.
The chapter then shifts from individual consecration to God’s blessing upon the entire nation.
God commands Moses to instruct Aaron and his sons how to bless Israel. They are to ask the Lord to bless and protect His people, cause His face to shine upon them, show them grace, turn His face toward them, and give them peace.
God concludes by declaring that through this blessing His name will be placed upon the Israelites, and He Himself will bless them.
