Obadiah Chapter 1 is the shortest book in the Old Testament, consisting of a single chapter. The Edomites lived in mountainous regions with seemingly impregnable fortresses carved into the rocks. Their location caused them to become proud and self-confident. They believed no enemy could reach them. However, God warns that their pride has deceived them. Even if they soar like eagles and build their nests among the stars, He will bring them down.
The prophecy describes how complete Edom’s destruction will be. Unlike ordinary thieves who leave something behind, God’s judgment will leave nothing untouched. Edom’s allies and friends will betray them, turning against the very nation they once trusted.
God explains why this judgment is coming. Edom had committed violence against their relatives, the descendants of Jacob. When Jerusalem was attacked and plundered by foreign invaders, Edom stood by and watched. Obadiah then broadens his message to include all nations. He declares that the “Day of the Lord” is near upon all nations. Just as Edom received judgment for its actions, every nation will ultimately be held accountable before God. What people do to others will return upon their own heads.
The chapter concludes with hope for Israel. While Edom faces destruction, Mount Zion will experience deliverance. God’s people will possess their inheritance once again. The house of Jacob will be restored and strengthened.
