2 Kings Chapter 6 Summary
2 Kings 6 begins with the sons of the prophets telling Elisha that their meeting place has become too small. They ask permission to travel to the Jordan River, where they can cut timber and build a larger place to live.
Elisha agrees and accompanies them.
While one of the men is cutting down a tree, the iron axe head falls into the water. The man becomes distressed because the axe was borrowed.
Elisha asks where it fell. After being shown the location, he cuts a stick and throws it into the water. Miraculously, the iron axe head floats to the surface, allowing the man to retrieve it.
The chapter then shifts to the conflict between Israel and Syria.
The king of Syria repeatedly plans military operations against Israel, but God reveals the Syrian king’s plans to Elisha. Elisha warns the king of Israel, allowing him to avoid the locations where the Syrians intend to attack.
The Syrian king becomes convinced that someone within his own ranks must be revealing his plans.
His servants explain that there is no traitor. Instead, Elisha the prophet tells the king of Israel even the words the Syrian king speaks privately.
The king discovers that Elisha is in Dothan and sends horses, chariots, and a large military force to capture him. The Syrian army surrounds the city during the night.
When Elisha’s servant rises the next morning and sees the enormous enemy force, he becomes terrified.
Elisha calmly tells him:
“Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them.”
Elisha then prays that God will open his servant’s eyes.
Suddenly, the servant sees what had previously been invisible—the mountain surrounding Elisha is filled with horses and chariots of fire.
As the Syrian soldiers approach, Elisha prays again, and God strikes them with blindness. Elisha then leads the confused army into Samaria.
Once they are inside the city, God restores their sight. The Syrians discover that they are surrounded by Israel.
The king of Israel asks Elisha whether he should kill them, but Elisha refuses. Instead, he commands the king to provide food and water for the captured soldiers.
A great feast is prepared for them, and afterward they are released and return to their master.
Later, however, Ben-hadad king of Syria gathers his entire army and besieges Samaria.
The siege creates an extreme famine inside the city. Food becomes extraordinarily scarce and expensive, and the suffering reaches horrifying levels.
When the king of Israel witnesses the desperation of his people, he tears his clothes in grief. Instead of humbling himself before God, however, he directs his anger toward Elisha and vows to kill the prophet.
The chapter ends with the king’s messenger arriving at Elisha’s house, leaving Samaria trapped in desperate circumstances and preparing the way for God’s miraculous intervention in the following chapter.
