1 Kings Chapter 6 records one of the greatest construction projects in Israel’s history—the building of Solomon’s Temple in Jerusalem. Four hundred and eighty years after Israel came out of Egypt, King Solomon begins constructing a permanent house dedicated to the Lord. The chapter describes the Temple’s dimensions, chambers, inner sanctuary, cedar paneling, gold-covered furnishings, and magnificent craftsmanship. Yet in the middle of these architectural details, God gives Solomon an important reminder: His presence among Israel depends on covenant faithfulness, not merely on the beauty of a building.
1 Kings Chapter 6 Summary
1 Kings 6 begins in the fourth year of Solomon’s reign, 480 years after the Israelites came out of Egypt. Solomon begins constructing the house of the Lord in Jerusalem.
The Temple is sixty cubits long, twenty cubits wide, and thirty cubits high. A porch is constructed across the front, and additional chambers are built along the sides of the Temple.
The construction is carried out with extraordinary care. Stones are prepared at the quarry before being brought to the building site so that the sound of hammers, axes, and other iron tools is not heard at the Temple during construction.
In the middle of the building account, the word of the Lord comes to Solomon.
God reminds Solomon that if he walks according to His statutes, obeys His judgments, and keeps His commandments, God will fulfill the promise He made concerning David.
The Lord declares that He will dwell among the Israelites and will not forsake His people.
Construction then continues.
The interior walls are covered with cedar so that no stone is visible inside. Cypress is used for the flooring, and the Temple is decorated with carved gourds, flowers, palm trees, and cherubim.
Solomon constructs the innermost sanctuary—the Most Holy Place—to house the Ark of the Covenant. This sacred chamber is twenty cubits long, twenty cubits wide, and twenty cubits high and is overlaid with pure gold.
Two enormous cherubim made from olive wood are placed inside the Most Holy Place. Each is ten cubits high, and their outstretched wings span the width of the sanctuary.
Solomon overlays the interior of the Temple with gold, including portions of the walls, altar, and inner sanctuary. The result is an extraordinarily magnificent house dedicated to the Lord.
The entrance to the Most Holy Place is constructed with doors of olive wood decorated with carved cherubim, palm trees, and flowers and covered with gold. Similar craftsmanship is used for the entrance to the main sanctuary.
The inner courtyard is also constructed using carefully prepared stone and cedar beams.
The chapter concludes by recording the length of the project. Solomon begins laying the Temple’s foundation in the fourth year of his reign and completes the structure in his eleventh year.
