The Lord declares that marriage is a covenant established before Him. He desires godly families and calls husbands and wives to remain faithful to one another. Because of this, God famously declares that He hates divorce because it covers one’s life with violence and betrayal.
The people also complain that God seems to ignore justice, questioning why the wicked appear to prosper. Malachi warns that such attitudes reveal spiritual blindness and prepare the way for God’s coming judgment, which will be addressed further in the next chapter.
