Daniel Chapter 5 records the dramatic fall of Babylon during the reign of King Belshazzar. During an extravagant banquet, Belshazzar arrogantly uses the sacred vessels taken from the Temple in Jerusalem while praising pagan gods. Suddenly, a mysterious hand appears and writes a divine message upon the palace wall, terrifying the king and leaving Babylon’s wisest men unable to interpret it.
Daniel is summoned and boldly explains that Belshazzar has failed to learn from the humbling of Nebuchadnezzar. Because the king has exalted himself against the Lord, his kingdom has been judged. That very night, Babylon falls, Belshazzar is killed, and Darius the Mede receives the kingdom.
Daniel Chapter 5 Summary
Daniel 5 begins with King Belshazzar hosting an enormous feast for a thousand of his nobles. During the celebration, the king drinks wine with his guests and makes a shocking command.
Belshazzar orders that the sacred gold and silver vessels taken from the Temple in Jerusalem be brought into the banquet hall.
The king, his nobles, wives, and concubines drink from the sacred vessels while praising idols made of gold, silver, bronze, iron, wood, and stone.
Suddenly, the celebration is interrupted by a supernatural event.
The fingers of a human hand appear and begin writing upon the plaster wall of the royal palace near the lampstand. Belshazzar watches the hand and becomes terrified. His face changes, his strength fails, and his knees begin knocking together.
The king summons Babylon’s wise men and promises great rewards to anyone capable of reading and interpreting the mysterious writing. None of them can explain the message.
The queen then tells Belshazzar about Daniel, who had demonstrated extraordinary wisdom during the reign of Nebuchadnezzar.
Daniel is brought before the king.
Belshazzar offers Daniel wealth, a gold chain, and authority as the third ruler in the kingdom if he can interpret the writing. Daniel tells the king to keep his gifts, although he agrees to reveal the meaning.
Before interpreting the message, Daniel reminds Belshazzar about Nebuchadnezzar.
God had given Nebuchadnezzar tremendous power and glory, but when the king became proud, God humbled him until he recognized that the Most High rules over human kingdoms.
Daniel then directly confronts Belshazzar.
Although Belshazzar knew what had happened to Nebuchadnezzar, he refused to humble himself. Instead, he exalted himself against the Lord by using the Temple vessels for his feast and praising lifeless idols.
Daniel explains that the mysterious words are MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.
MENE means that God has numbered Belshazzar’s kingdom and brought it to an end.
TEKEL means that Belshazzar has been weighed in the balances and found wanting.
PERES, related to UPHARSIN, means that the kingdom will be divided and given to the Medes and Persians.
Belshazzar honors Daniel as promised, but the divine judgment cannot be reversed.
That very night Belshazzar is killed, and Darius the Mede receives the kingdom.
Daniel 5 powerfully demonstrates that earthly kingdoms may appear invincible, but every ruler ultimately remains accountable to the sovereign God.
