Judges Chapter 3 introduces the first judges whom God raised up to deliver Israel after they repeatedly turned away from Him. Because Israel failed to completely drive out the Canaanite nations, God allowed those nations to remain as a test of Israel’s faithfulness and to teach future generations warfare. Judges Chapter 3 begins by explaining why God allowed several Canaanite nations to remain in the land. Their presence tested whether Israel would obey God’s commands and also provided military training for generations that had not experienced the conquest under Joshua. Instead of remaining faithful, the Israelites intermarried with the surrounding peoples, worshiped their false gods, and abandoned the Lord.
As a result of their disobedience, God allowed King Cushan-Rishathaim of Mesopotamia to oppress Israel for eight years. When the Israelites cried out for help, God raised up Othniel, the nephew of Caleb, as the first judge of Israel. Filled with the Spirit of the Lord, Othniel defeated Israel’s oppressor and brought peace to the land for forty years until his death.
Following Othniel’s death, Israel once again turned away from God. This time the Lord allowed Eglon, king of Moab, to gain power over Israel with the help of the Ammonites and Amalekites. Israel served Moab for eighteen years before crying out to God once more.
God raised up Ehud, a left-handed man from the tribe of Benjamin, to deliver His people. Ehud crafted a double-edged sword and concealed it on his right thigh. While presenting Israel’s tribute to King Eglon, Ehud requested a private audience, claiming to have a secret message from God. When they were alone, Ehud drew his sword and struck Eglon, killing him. He escaped before the king’s servants realized what had happened.
Ehud then rallied the Israelites, who seized the fords of the Jordan River and defeated ten thousand Moabite soldiers. Israel was delivered from Moab’s oppression, and the land enjoyed peace for eighty years.
The chapter concludes by introducing Shamgar, who struck down six hundred Philistines using nothing more than an oxgoad, a simple farming tool. His victory demonstrates that God can use ordinary people and ordinary tools to accomplish extraordinary purposes.
Judges Chapter 3 establishes the pattern that continues throughout the rest of the book: Israel sins, suffers oppression, cries out to God, and receives deliverance through a judge. It reveals both humanity’s tendency to wander from God and His unwavering willingness to rescue those who repent.
