Joshua Chapter 2 Summary

As Israel camped east of the Jordan River, Joshua secretly sent two spies to scout the land of Canaan, especially the city of Jericho.

The spies entered Jericho and stayed at the house of Rahab, a woman who lived within the city’s walls. News of their arrival quickly reached the king of Jericho, who sent messengers demanding that Rahab surrender the spies.

Instead of obeying the king, Rahab hid the spies on the roof beneath stalks of flax. She told the king’s messengers that the men had already left the city and encouraged them to pursue the supposed escapees.

After the search party departed, Rahab went to the roof and spoke with the spies. She confessed that the people of Jericho were terrified because they had heard of the Lord’s mighty acts, including Israel’s deliverance from Egypt and victories over enemy kings.

Rahab declared her faith in the God of Israel, acknowledging that He was the true God of heaven and earth.

Because she had protected them, Rahab asked the spies to spare her family when Israel attacked the city. The spies agreed and instructed her to tie a scarlet cord in her window as a sign of protection.

They promised that everyone gathered inside her house during the attack would be spared.

Rahab then lowered the spies from her window using a rope because her house was built into the city wall. She advised them to hide in the nearby hills for three days until the king’s search party returned.

The spies followed her instructions and safely returned to Joshua. They reported that the Lord had given the land into Israel’s hands and that fear had already fallen upon the inhabitants.

Joshua Chapter 2 reveals the power of faith and demonstrates how God can use unexpected people to accomplish His purposes. Rahab’s trust in God became a testimony of salvation and redemption.
