It also introduces the foundation of the relationship between God and mankind.
Genesis Chapter 1 Summary
Genesis Chapter 1 opens with the famous words, “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” At first, the earth is empty and covered in darkness, while the Spirit of God moves upon the waters. God then begins creating the world day by day through His spoken word.
On the first day, God creates light and separates it from darkness, calling the light Day and the darkness Night. On the second day, God creates the sky to divide the waters above from the waters below.
On the third day, God gathers the waters together so dry land appears. He calls the dry land Earth and the gathered waters Seas. God then creates grass, plants, and fruit trees to grow upon the earth.
On the fourth day, God creates the sun, moon, and stars. These lights separate day from night and help mark seasons, days, and years.
On the fifth day, God fills the seas with living creatures and creates birds to fly across the sky. He blesses them and commands them to multiply.
On the sixth day, God creates land animals, including livestock and wild creatures. Then God creates mankind in His own image, both male and female. God gives humanity authority over the earth and every living thing. He blesses them and tells them to be fruitful and multiply.
God provides plants and fruit for food to both humans and animals. After completing creation, God looks over everything He has made and declares that it is “very good.”
Genesis Chapter 1 shows that God is the Creator of all things and that creation was made with design and purpose. Humanity is shown to have special value because people are created in God’s image. The chapter also teaches that God brings order out of chaos and that everything He creates is good.
