2 Kings Chapter 4 Summary
The chapter begins with the widow of one of the sons of the prophets crying out to Elisha. Her husband has died, leaving behind a debt, and a creditor threatens to take her two sons as servants. When Elisha asks what she has in her house, she replies that she has nothing except a small jar of oil.
Elisha tells her to borrow as many empty containers as possible from her neighbors. She and her sons shut the door and begin pouring the small amount of oil into the containers. Miraculously, the oil continues flowing until every vessel is full. Elisha instructs her to sell the oil, pay her debt, and live on the remaining money.
The chapter then introduces a wealthy woman from Shunem who regularly provides food for Elisha. Recognizing him as a man of God, she and her husband prepare a small room where he can stay. In gratitude, Elisha promises that she will have a son, even though her husband is old. The promise is fulfilled, and she gives birth to a child.
Years later, the boy suddenly becomes ill while with his father in the fields and dies in his mother’s arms. The Shunammite woman immediately travels to find Elisha. Refusing to give up hope, she brings him back to her home. Elisha prays to the Lord and stretches himself over the child. The boy’s life is miraculously restored, and Elisha returns him to his mother.
Later, during a famine, Elisha returns to Gilgal. A poisonous plant is accidentally added to a pot of stew prepared for the prophets. When the men realize the food is dangerous, Elisha adds flour to the pot, and the stew becomes safe to eat.
Finally, a man brings Elisha twenty loaves of barley bread. Elisha commands that the food be given to one hundred men. Though the servant doubts there will be enough, everyone eats and food remains, just as the Lord had promised.
