Exodus Chapter 4 continues God’s call of Moses at the burning bush. Exodus Chapter 4 Summary
Moses questions whether the Israelites will believe that God has truly appeared to him. To reassure him, God gives Moses three miraculous signs. First, Moses throws down his staff, and it becomes a serpent before returning to a staff when he picks it up. Next, God causes Moses’ hand to become diseased and then immediately restores it. Finally, God tells Moses that if the people still refuse to believe, he can pour water from the Nile onto the ground, where it will become blood.
Despite witnessing these miracles, Moses protests that he is not an eloquent speaker. God reminds Moses that He is the Creator of the human mouth and promises to help him speak and teach him what to say. When Moses continues to hesitate, God’s anger is kindled, yet He graciously appoints Moses’ brother Aaron to serve as his spokesman while Moses delivers God’s message.
Moses returns to his father-in-law Jethro, receives permission to leave Midian, and begins the journey back to Egypt with his wife and sons. Along the way, God reminds Moses that Pharaoh’s heart will be hardened and that Israel is God’s firstborn son.
During the journey, a serious encounter occurs when God confronts Moses because he had neglected the covenant sign of circumcision for his son. Zipporah quickly circumcises the child, and the danger passes.
The chapter concludes as Aaron meets Moses in the wilderness. Together they gather the elders of Israel, perform the miraculous signs before the people, and announce that God has seen their suffering. The Israelites believe God’s message and worship Him with grateful hearts.
