Exodus Chapter 1 begins the story of Israel’s suffering in Egypt after the death of Joseph and his generation. As the Israelites continue to grow in number, a new Pharaoh becomes fearful of their strength and places them under harsh slavery. This chapter introduces the oppression of God’s people and sets the stage for the future deliverance through Moses.

Exodus Chapter 1 Summary

Exodus Chapter 1 opens by listing the sons of Jacob who came to Egypt with their families. Over time, Joseph and his generation die, but the people of Israel continue to multiply greatly. The Israelites become numerous and strong throughout the land of Egypt.

A new Pharaoh rises to power who does not remember Joseph or the good he had done for Egypt. Pharaoh becomes afraid that the growing population of Israelites could become a threat during war and possibly join Egypt’s enemies. Because of this fear, he decides to oppress them and place them under heavy burdens.

The Egyptians force the Israelites into hard labor and make them build the store cities of Pithom and Raamses. The Israelites suffer greatly under cruel slavery, working in fields and construction under harsh conditions. However, despite the oppression, the people of Israel continue to multiply and grow stronger.

Pharaoh becomes even more troubled by their increasing numbers. He commands the Hebrew midwives, Shiphrah and Puah, to kill every Hebrew baby boy at birth while allowing the girls to live. However, the midwives fear God and refuse to obey Pharaoh’s evil command. Instead, they allow the baby boys to live.

When Pharaoh questions them, the midwives explain that Hebrew women give birth quickly before the midwives arrive. Because the midwives honor God and protect innocent life, God blesses them and gives them families of their own.

Pharaoh then gives a command to all the Egyptians that every Hebrew baby boy must be thrown into the Nile River, while the girls are allowed to live.

Exodus Chapter 1 reveals both the cruelty of Pharaoh and the faithfulness of God during difficult times. Even in suffering and oppression, God continues to preserve His people. The chapter also highlights the courage of those who fear God more than man, showing that obedience to God is greater than obedience to evil authority.
