Matthew Chapter 1 Summary

May 31, 2026 | Gospels, Matthew

Matthew Chapter 1 opens the New Testament by establishing Jesus Christ as the promised Messiah, the Son of David, and the Son of Abraham. The chapter contains Jesus’ genealogy, demonstrating His legal right to David’s throne, and records the miraculous circumstances surrounding His birth. Matthew emphasizes that Jesus fulfills God’s promises and prophecies from the Old Testament.

Matthew Chapter 1 Summary

Matthew Chapter 1 begins with a genealogy tracing the lineage of Jesus Christ from Abraham through King David and ultimately to Joseph, the husband of Mary. This genealogy is significant because it establishes Jesus as the rightful heir to the promises made to Abraham and the royal throne of David.

The genealogy is divided into three major periods: from Abraham to David, from David to the Babylonian exile, and from the exile to Christ. Throughout the list, Matthew highlights God’s faithfulness in preserving the family line through which the Messiah would come.

Several notable women are included in the genealogy, including Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, and Bathsheba. Their inclusion demonstrates God’s grace and His ability to work through imperfect people to accomplish His redemptive plan.

The chapter then shifts to the account of Jesus’ birth. Mary is betrothed to Joseph, but before they come together as husband and wife, she is found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit.

Joseph, described as a righteous and compassionate man, does not want to expose Mary to public shame. He plans to quietly end the engagement. However, while he considers these things, an angel of the Lord appears to him in a dream.

The angel tells Joseph not to be afraid to take Mary as his wife because the child she carries has been conceived by the Holy Spirit. The angel reveals that the child will be named Jesus, which means “The Lord saves,” because He will save His people from their sins.

Matthew explains that these events fulfill the prophecy spoken through Isaiah: “Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel,” meaning “God with us.”

Joseph obeys the angel’s message. He takes Mary as his wife and faithfully cares for her. After the child is born, Joseph names Him Jesus exactly as the angel instructed.

Matthew Chapter 1 reveals that Jesus is both the promised King and the promised Savior. His birth fulfills centuries of prophecy and marks the beginning of God’s plan to bring salvation to humanity.
