Mark Chapter 3 begins with Jesus entering the synagogue where He encounters a man with a shriveled hand. The Pharisees watch closely, hoping to accuse Him if He heals on the Sabbath. Knowing their thoughts, Jesus asks whether it is lawful to do good or evil on the Sabbath, to save life or destroy it. When they remain silent, Jesus is grieved by the hardness of their hearts and heals the man’s hand completely. Rather than rejoicing over the miracle, the Pharisees immediately begin plotting with the Herodians to destroy Him.
As Jesus withdraws to the Sea of Galilee, enormous crowds follow Him from throughout Israel and neighboring regions. People come seeking healing, and Jesus compassionately cures many who are sick. Those possessed by unclean spirits fall before Him, recognizing Him as the Son of God, but Jesus commands them to remain silent because the time for publicly revealing His identity has not yet come.
Jesus then ascends a mountain and calls twelve men to become His apostles. He appoints them to be with Him, to preach the Gospel, and to receive authority to cast out demons. The twelve include Simon Peter, James, John, Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot, who would later betray Him. Satan would never work against his own kingdom.
Jesus then warns about blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. While every other sin can be forgiven through repentance, those who continually reject the clear work of the Holy Spirit and deliberately attribute God’s work to evil harden their hearts against the very means by which they could receive forgiveness.
The chapter concludes as Jesus’ mother and brothers arrive seeking Him. Looking at those gathered around Him, Jesus declares that whoever does God’s will is His true family. Spiritual relationships established through faith in God are eternal and surpass even earthly family ties.
