Esther Chapter 5 records one of the most courageous moments in Esther’s life. After calling the Jews of Susa to fast for three days, Queen Esther risks her life by approaching King Ahasuerus without being summoned. Persian law made such an action dangerous, but Esther moves forward to intervene for her people.
The king receives Esther favorably and offers to grant her request. Rather than immediately exposing Haman’s plot, Esther wisely invites the king and Haman to a banquet and then invites them to a second banquet the following day. Meanwhile, Haman’s pride and hatred toward Mordecai intensify, leading him to prepare a massive gallows for Mordecai’s execution.
Esther Chapter 5 Summary
Esther 5 begins on the third day after Esther and the Jewish people have been fasting. Esther puts on her royal robes and courageously enters the inner court of the king’s palace, even though she has not been summoned.
King Ahasuerus sees Esther standing in the court and receives her favorably. He extends the golden scepter toward her, sparing her life and allowing her to approach.
The king asks Esther what she desires and promises that her request may be granted, even up to half of his kingdom.
Rather than immediately revealing Haman’s plan to destroy the Jews, Esther invites the king and Haman to a banquet she has prepared.
At the banquet, the king again asks Esther what she wants. Esther responds by inviting the king and Haman to another banquet the following day, promising that she will then reveal her request.
Haman leaves the first banquet joyful and proud because he has been personally invited by the queen. However, his happiness quickly disappears when he sees Mordecai at the king’s gate.
Mordecai refuses to rise or tremble before him, filling Haman with rage.
Haman restrains himself and returns home, where he gathers his friends and his wife Zeresh. He boasts about his enormous wealth, his many sons, the honors he has received from the king, and his advancement above the other officials.
Haman also proudly explains that Queen Esther invited only him and the king to her banquet and has invited him again the following day.
Yet Haman admits that none of these accomplishments satisfy him as long as Mordecai remains at the king’s gate.
Zeresh and Haman’s friends advise him to construct an enormous gallows and ask the king the next morning for permission to execute Mordecai.
The suggestion pleases Haman, and he has the gallows prepared, unknowingly setting the stage for the dramatic reversal that will soon follow.
