Job Chapter 2 continues the testing of Job’s faith. After losing his possessions and children, Job remained faithful to God. Job Chapter 2 Summary
Once again, the heavenly beings presented themselves before the Lord, and Satan also appeared among them.
God pointed out Job’s continued faithfulness despite the devastating losses he had already suffered. The Lord declared that Job still maintained his integrity even after Satan’s attacks.
Satan responded by claiming that a person will sacrifice everything to preserve his own life. He argued that if Job’s physical health were taken away, he would surely curse God.
God allowed Satan to afflict Job physically but forbade him from taking Job’s life.
Satan immediately struck Job with painful sores from the soles of his feet to the top of his head. The suffering was so severe that Job sat among ashes, scraping his skin with a broken piece of pottery to find relief.
As Job endured his misery, his wife urged him to abandon his faith. She told him to curse God and die.
Job refused. He gently rebuked her and declared that believers should accept both blessings and difficulties from God. Despite his suffering, Job did not sin with his lips.
News of Job’s condition spread, and three of his friends—Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite—came to comfort and mourn with him.
When they saw Job from a distance, they barely recognized him because of his suffering. Overcome with grief, they wept loudly, tore their robes, and threw dust into the air as a sign of mourning.
The friends sat with Job on the ground for seven days and seven nights without speaking a word because they saw how great his suffering was.
The chapter ends with Job sitting silently in pain while his friends share in his grief, preparing for the long discussions that follow.
