John Chapter 2 reveals the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry through His first recorded miracle and His cleansing of the Temple. John Chapter 2 opens with Jesus attending a wedding in Cana of Galilee alongside His mother and His disciples. During the celebration, the hosts run out of wine, creating an embarrassing situation for the family.
Mary informs Jesus of the problem, trusting Him to act. Although Jesus explains that His appointed hour has not yet fully come, Mary confidently tells the servants to do whatever He commands.
Jesus instructs the servants to fill six large stone water jars with water. After they obey, He tells them to draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet. Miraculously, the water has become the finest wine.
The master of the feast praises the bridegroom for saving the best wine until last, unaware of the miracle that has taken place. Through this first public sign, Jesus reveals His divine glory, and His disciples place their faith in Him.
Afterward, Jesus travels to Capernaum with His mother, brothers, and disciples before going to Jerusalem for the Passover.
Upon entering the Temple courts, Jesus finds merchants selling sacrificial animals and money changers conducting business within the sacred grounds. The place intended for worship has become a marketplace driven by profit.
Filled with righteous zeal for His Father’s house, Jesus fashions a whip from cords and drives out the sheep and cattle. He overturns the tables of the money changers and commands those selling doves to remove their merchandise, declaring, “Do not make My Father’s house a house of trade.”

The Jewish leaders demand a sign to prove His authority for these actions. Jesus responds with the profound statement, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” They mistakenly believe He is speaking about the physical Temple, but Jesus is referring to His own body and His future resurrection.
