Luke Chapter 4 marks the beginning of Jesus Christ’s public ministry and reveals both His divine authority and His compassionate mission to bring salvation to the world. After overcoming Satan’s temptations in the wilderness, Jesus returns to Galilee in the power of the Holy Spirit. In the synagogue at Nazareth, He boldly announces that He is the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy concerning the promised Messiah. Though rejected by His hometown, Jesus continues His ministry by teaching with authority, casting out demons, healing the sick, and proclaiming the Kingdom of God. Luke Chapter 4 Summary
The chapter begins with Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, being led into the wilderness for forty days, where He is tempted by the devil. After fasting, Satan tempts Him to turn stones into bread, but Jesus responds with Scripture, declaring that man lives by every word of God.
The devil next offers Jesus authority over all the kingdoms of the world in exchange for worship. Jesus firmly rejects the temptation, affirming that worship belongs to God alone. Finally, Satan urges Jesus to throw Himself from the pinnacle of the Temple, twisting Scripture to support his challenge. Once again, Jesus answers with God’s Word, refusing to test the Father. Having failed, the devil departs until a more opportune time.
Jesus returns to Galilee empowered by the Holy Spirit, and His reputation spreads throughout the region. Arriving at His hometown of Nazareth, He enters the synagogue on the Sabbath and reads from the scroll of Isaiah:
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor…”
Rolling up the scroll, Jesus declares, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” Although the people initially marvel at His gracious words, they quickly become offended when He reminds them that God’s blessings have often extended to Gentiles who believed while many Israelites rejected Him. Enraged, the crowd attempts to throw Him from a cliff, but Jesus miraculously passes through their midst unharmed.
Jesus then travels to Capernaum, where He teaches with remarkable authority. In the synagogue, He rebukes and casts out a demon from a possessed man, astonishing the people with His power over unclean spirits.
Leaving the synagogue, Jesus heals Simon Peter’s mother-in-law of a high fever. As evening comes, crowds bring the sick and demon-possessed to Him. Jesus heals every one of them and silences the demons who recognize Him as the Son of God.
Though the crowds beg Him to remain, Jesus explains that He must preach the Kingdom of God in other cities because this is the purpose for which He was sent. He continues traveling throughout Judea, preaching in synagogues and revealing the good news of God’s salvation.
