Revelation Chapter 4 begins with John seeing an open door in heaven. The voice he had previously heard, sounding like a trumpet, calls him upward so that he can be shown what must take place afterward.
Immediately John is “in the Spirit,” and before him appears one of the most magnificent scenes described anywhere in Scripture: a throne standing in heaven with One seated upon it.
John does not attempt to describe God’s physical appearance directly. Instead, he uses the brilliance of precious stones to communicate the overwhelming glory surrounding Him. The One seated upon the throne appears like jasper and sardius, while an emerald-like rainbow surrounds the throne.
