1 Samuel 5 begins after the Philistines capture the Ark of God during their victory over Israel. They carry the Ark from Ebenezer to Ashdod and place it inside the temple of their god Dagon, positioning it beside Dagon’s image as though the God of Israel had been conquered.
When the people of Ashdod enter the temple the following morning, however, they discover Dagon fallen facedown on the ground before the Ark of the Lord. They lift the idol and return it to its place.
The next morning, Dagon has fallen before the Ark again. This time, his head and hands have been broken off and lie on the threshold, leaving only the body of the idol intact. The humiliating destruction of Dagon demonstrates that the Lord is not a defeated deity. Even within Dagon’s own temple, the Philistine god is powerless before Him.
God’s judgment then extends beyond the temple. The hand of the Lord comes heavily upon the people of Ashdod and its surrounding territory, afflicting them with tumors.
Recognizing that their suffering is connected to the Ark, the people declare that it cannot remain in Ashdod. The Philistine rulers decide to move it to Gath.
But when the Ark arrives in Gath, severe affliction strikes that city as well. Panic spreads among the people as both young and old are affected.
The Philistines then send the Ark toward Ekron. When the people of Ekron see it arriving, they cry out in fear, believing the Ark has been brought there to destroy them.
