Genesis Chapter 6 marks a dramatic turning point in the early history of humanity. As the human population grows, wickedness spreads throughout the earth, and mankind becomes increasingly corrupt and violent. God sees that humanity’s thoughts and intentions are continually bent toward evil, bringing Him deep grief. Yet amid this dark generation, one man stands apart—Noah. Because Noah finds favor in the eyes of the Lord and walks faithfully with God, he is chosen to preserve human life and the creatures of the earth through the coming judgment of the Flood.
Genesis Chapter 6 Summary
Genesis 6 begins with humanity multiplying across the earth. The chapter describes the mysterious “sons of God” taking wives from the “daughters of men” and mentions the Nephilim, mighty men who were renowned in ancient times.
As human civilization expands, so does sin. God observes that mankind’s wickedness has become great and that every inclination of the human heart is continually evil. Violence and corruption fill the earth. God is grieved by what humanity has become and determines to judge the corrupted world.
In the midst of this widespread wickedness, Noah finds favor in the eyes of the Lord. Scripture describes Noah as a righteous man who was blameless among the people of his generation and who walked with God. Noah has three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
God reveals to Noah that He intends to bring an end to the violent and corrupt world through a catastrophic flood. However, God provides a means of preservation. He commands Noah to construct an enormous ark from gopher wood, giving him specific instructions regarding its dimensions, rooms, covering, and structure.
God tells Noah that He will establish His covenant with him. Noah, his wife, his sons, and their wives will enter the ark. God also commands Noah to bring representatives of the living creatures into the ark so that they may survive the Flood. Noah must gather enough food for his family and the animals.
The chapter ends with a powerful statement about Noah’s faith and obedience: Noah did everything exactly as God commanded him.
