Esther Chapter 2 introduces Esther, the young Jewish woman who would become queen of Persia. Following Queen Vashti’s removal, King Ahasuerus (Xerxes I) seeks a new queen. Through God’s unseen providence, Esther is elevated from an orphaned exile to the highest position in the kingdom. This chapter also records Mordecai’s discovery of a plot against the king, setting the stage for future events that would help save the Jewish people.
Esther Chapter 2 Summary
After Queen Vashti was removed from her position, King Ahasuerus’ advisors suggested gathering beautiful young women from across the Persian Empire so the king could choose a new queen.
Young women were brought to the royal palace in Susa and placed under the care of Hegai, the keeper of the women. Among them was Esther, a Jewish orphan who had been raised by her cousin Mordecai after the deaths of her parents.
Esther quickly gained favor with Hegai because of her character and grace. He provided her with special treatment and the finest preparations before her appearance before the king.
Following Mordecai’s instruction, Esther did not reveal her Jewish identity. Mordecai regularly visited near the palace to learn how she was doing and to watch over her welfare.
After twelve months of preparation, each young woman was brought before the king. When Esther’s turn arrived, she followed Hegai’s advice and took only what was recommended.
Esther’s beauty, humility, and grace won the king’s heart more than all the other women. King Ahasuerus placed the royal crown upon her head and made her queen in place of Vashti.
To celebrate Esther’s appointment, the king held a great feast and granted gifts throughout the empire.
Meanwhile, Mordecai continued serving near the king’s gate. During this time, he overheard two royal officials, Bigthana and Teresh, plotting to assassinate the king.
Mordecai immediately informed Esther, who reported the matter to the king while giving credit to Mordecai. The plot was investigated, confirmed, and the conspirators were executed.
The account of Mordecai’s loyalty was recorded in the royal chronicles, though he received no immediate reward.
Esther Chapter 2 reveals God’s providence working behind the scenes, positioning Esther and Mordecai for the crucial roles they would soon play in preserving the Jewish people.
