Revelation Chapter 5 continues John’s breathtaking vision of the throne room of heaven and centers upon a sealed scroll and Jesus Christ, the Lamb who alone is worthy to open it. John sees a scroll in the right hand of the One seated upon the throne, sealed with seven seals. When no one in heaven, earth, or under the earth is found worthy to open the scroll, John begins to weep.

The Lamb takes the scroll, and all heaven erupts in worship. Revelation Chapter 5 Summary
Revelation 5 begins with John looking toward the One seated upon the heavenly throne.
In His right hand is a mysterious scroll:
“Written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals.”
A mighty angel then proclaims throughout creation:
“Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof?”
Yet no one is initially found worthy.
No one in heaven, on earth, or under the earth is able to open the scroll or even look upon it.
John is overwhelmed.
He writes:
“And I wept much, because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book.”
But John’s grief does not last.
One of the twenty-four elders tells him:
“Weep not.”
Someone has overcome.
The elder announces:
“Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book.”
John then looks toward the throne expecting the victorious Lion.
Instead, he sees:
“A Lamb as it had been slain.”

But the worship expands even farther.
John hears every creature in heaven, on earth, under the earth, and in the sea joining the praise.
They proclaim blessing, honor, glory, and power to the One seated upon the throne and to the Lamb forever and ever.
The four living creatures respond:
“Amen.”
And the twenty-four elders fall down and worship.
Revelation Chapter 5 therefore reveals that the unfolding purposes of God are ultimately centered upon Jesus Christ.
The sealed scroll cannot be opened by political rulers, armies, angels, human wisdom, wealth, or earthly power.
Only Jesus is worthy.
He is simultaneously the conquering Lion of Judah and the sacrificial Lamb who was slain.
His apparent defeat at the cross was actually His victory.
Through His sacrifice, Christ redeemed people from every tribe, language, people, and nation.
Now the Lamb possesses authority to take the scroll and move God’s purposes toward their appointed fulfillment.
