Acts Chapter 1 serves as the bridge between the Gospels and the early Church. Written by Luke, the chapter records Jesus’ final instructions to His disciples after His resurrection, His ascension into heaven, and the preparation of the apostles for the coming of the Holy Spirit. Acts Chapter 1 Summary
Acts Chapter 1 opens with Luke addressing Theophilus and reminding him of his previous account concerning the life and ministry of Jesus.
After His resurrection, Jesus spends forty days appearing to His disciples and many other witnesses. During this time, He teaches them about the Kingdom of God and provides convincing proof that He is alive.
Jesus instructs the apostles not to leave Jerusalem but to wait for the promise of the Father—the Holy Spirit. He explains that while John baptized with water, they will soon be baptized with the Holy Spirit.
The disciples ask Jesus whether He is about to restore the kingdom to Israel. Jesus tells them that the timing of God’s plans belongs to the Father alone. Instead of focusing on dates and times, they are to focus on their mission.
Jesus gives one of the most important mission statements in the Bible:
“But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”
This verse outlines the spread of the Gospel throughout Acts and beyond.
After speaking these words, Jesus is taken up into heaven before the disciples’ eyes. A cloud receives Him, and they watch in amazement as He ascends.
As they continue looking into the sky, two angels appear and tell them that Jesus will return in the same manner as He departed. This gives the disciples hope and anticipation for Christ’s future return.
The apostles then return to Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives. They gather together in an upper room where they devote themselves to prayer and unity. Among those present are Peter, John, James, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Matthew, other disciples, several women, Mary the mother of Jesus, and Jesus’ brothers.
During this waiting period, Peter addresses the group concerning Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Jesus. Peter explains that Scripture had foretold Judas’ actions and that his place among the apostles must be filled.
Two men are nominated: Joseph called Barsabas and Matthias. The believers pray for God’s guidance and cast lots. Matthias is chosen and added to the eleven apostles, restoring the number of apostles to twelve.
The chapter concludes with the disciples united in prayer, faithfully waiting for the coming of the Holy Spirit and the beginning of the Church’s mission.
Acts Chapter 1 emphasizes obedience, prayer, unity, and dependence upon the power of the Holy Spirit before undertaking God’s work.
