Acts Chapter 3 begins as Peter and John travel to the Temple in Jerusalem for the afternoon time of prayer. At the Beautiful Gate sits a man who has been unable to walk since birth. Every day he is carried there to ask those entering the Temple for money.
As the man asks Peter and John for alms, Peter looks directly at him and says, “Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.” Peter takes the man by the right hand, and immediately his feet and ankles become strong. For the first time in his life, the man stands, walks, leaps with joy, and enters the Temple praising God.
The miraculous healing amazes everyone who witnesses it. The people recognize the man as the one who had always sat begging at the Temple gate, and they rush together in astonishment to Solomon’s Colonnade where Peter and John are standing.
Peter immediately directs the people’s attention away from himself and toward Jesus Christ. He explains that the miracle was not accomplished through human power or personal holiness but through faith in the name of Jesus. Peter boldly proclaims that although the people had rejected and crucified Jesus, God raised Him from the dead, and the apostles are eyewitnesses of His resurrection.
