Colossians Chapter 1 Summary

Paul begins by greeting the believers in Colossae and thanking God for their faith in Jesus Christ and their love for all believers.

He rejoices because of the hope laid up for them in heaven, a hope they learned through the Gospel. Paul notes that the Gospel is bearing fruit and growing throughout the world just as it has among them.

Paul tells the Colossians that he continually prays for them. He asks God to fill them with the knowledge of His will through spiritual wisdom and understanding. His desire is that they live lives worthy of the Lord, pleasing Him in every way.

Paul prays that they would bear fruit in good works, grow in the knowledge of God, and be strengthened with divine power to endure trials with patience and joy.

He then praises God for rescuing believers from the power of darkness and bringing them into the kingdom of His beloved Son.

Through Jesus Christ, believers have redemption through His blood and the forgiveness of sins.

Paul then presents one of the most exalted descriptions of Christ found anywhere in Scripture.

Jesus is described as the image of the invisible God. Through Him all things were created, including everything in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible. Thrones, dominions, rulers, and authorities were all created by Him and for Him.

Christ existed before all things, and by Him all things hold together.

He is also the head of the Church, His body. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, and preeminent over all creation.

Paul explains that all the fullness of God dwells in Christ. Through Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross, God has made peace and provided reconciliation between Himself and sinful humanity.

The Colossians were once separated from God because of their sinful actions, but through Christ’s death they have been reconciled and can now stand holy and blameless before Him.

Paul encourages them to remain grounded in the faith and not be moved away from the hope of the Gospel.

The chapter concludes with Paul describing his ministry. He willingly suffers for the sake of Christ and the Church.

Paul explains that God entrusted him with the mystery that had been hidden for ages but is now revealed to believers:

“Christ in you, the hope of glory.”

Paul’s goal is to proclaim Christ, teaching and warning everyone so that believers may become mature in their faith.

Colossians Chapter 1 reveals the absolute supremacy of Jesus Christ and the incredible salvation available through Him.
