2 Chronicles Chapter 1 Summary

2 Chronicles Chapter 1 opens with Solomon strengthened in his kingdom as the Lord establishes him as king over Israel. God’s favor is clearly upon Solomon, and the nation begins his reign in peace and unity.

Solomon gathers the leaders of Israel, including judges, commanders, and family heads, and travels with them to the high place at Gibeon. At that time, the tabernacle built by Moses in the wilderness remained there, although the Ark of the Covenant had already been brought to Jerusalem by David.

At Gibeon, Solomon worships before the Lord and offers one thousand burnt offerings on the bronze altar before the tabernacle. That night, God appears to Solomon in a dream and tells him to ask for whatever he desires.

Instead of requesting long life, wealth, power, or victory over enemies, Solomon asks God for wisdom and knowledge to properly govern the people of Israel. Solomon recognizes that the nation belongs to God and that leading such a great people requires divine guidance.

God is pleased with Solomon’s humble request. Because Solomon desired wisdom rather than selfish gain, God promises not only wisdom and knowledge but also riches, wealth, honor, and greatness beyond any king before or after him.

Afterward, Solomon returns to Jerusalem and continues strengthening the kingdom. The chapter closes by describing Solomon’s growing wealth and military strength. Horses and chariots are gathered in great numbers, and silver and gold become extremely common in Jerusalem during his reign.

2 Chronicles Chapter 1 teaches that true wisdom comes from God and that humility pleases Him. Solomon’s example shows that seeking God first leads to blessings far greater than selfish ambition or earthly power.
