Numbers Chapter 4 Summary
The Lord commands Moses and Aaron to take a census of the Levites between the ages of thirty and fifty who are able to serve in the work of transporting the Tabernacle.
The Kohathites are given responsibility for carrying the most holy objects. Before they can approach, Aaron and his sons must carefully cover the Ark of the Covenant, the table of the Bread of the Presence, the lampstand, the altars, and the sacred utensils. The Kohathites are then permitted to carry these items, but they must not touch or look directly upon the holy objects, or they will die. Eleazar, the son of Aaron, is placed in charge of the oil, incense, grain offering, anointing oil, and oversight of the sanctuary.
The Gershonites are assigned responsibility for transporting the curtains, coverings, screens, and hangings of the Tabernacle. Their work is supervised by Ithamar, another son of Aaron.
The Merarites are responsible for carrying the structural parts of the Tabernacle, including its frames, crossbars, posts, bases, and other equipment. Their duties are also supervised by Ithamar, and each man is assigned specific items to carry.
Moses, Aaron, and the leaders then count the eligible men from each clan. There are 2,750 Kohathites, 2,630 Gershonites, and 3,200 Merarites, making a total of 8,580 Levites appointed for service.
Numbers Chapter 4 demonstrates that God’s work requires holiness, organization, responsibility, and cooperation. Every Levite had a specific task, and each role was essential to the movement and ministry of the Tabernacle.
