Acts Chapter 4 records the first major persecution of the early church following the healing of the lame man at the Temple. As Peter and John continue speaking to the crowds at the Temple, the priests, the captain of the Temple guard, and the Sadducees become greatly disturbed because they are preaching the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The apostles are arrested and held in custody overnight. Despite this opposition, many who hear the message believe, and the number of believers grows to about five thousand men.
The next day, Peter and John are brought before the Sanhedrin, including Annas, Caiaphas, and other Jewish leaders. Asked by what authority they performed the miraculous healing, Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, boldly declares that the lame man was healed by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth—the One whom they crucified but whom God raised from the dead.
Peter proclaims that Jesus is the rejected cornerstone who has become the foundation of God’s salvation. He then declares one of the Bible’s greatest statements about salvation: “Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
The religious leaders are astonished by Peter and John’s boldness, recognizing that they are ordinary, uneducated men who have been with Jesus. Unable to deny the obvious miracle, they command the apostles never to speak again in Jesus’ name. Peter and John respectfully refuse, declaring that they must obey God rather than men and cannot remain silent about what they have seen and heard.
After being released, the apostles return to the believers, who immediately unite in prayer. Rather than asking for protection from persecution, they pray for even greater boldness to continue proclaiming God’s Word while He performs signs and wonders through Jesus’ name.
God answers their prayer dramatically. The place where they are gathered shakes, they are all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they continue speaking God’s Word with boldness.
The chapter concludes by describing the extraordinary unity within the early church. Believers willingly share their possessions so that no one is in need. Among them is Joseph, called Barnabas, who sells a field and lays the money at the apostles’ feet to care for others.
