1 Chronicles 6 begins by identifying the three sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. These three men become the ancestors of the major Levitical family divisions that serve Israel in different responsibilities.
The genealogy then concentrates particularly on Kohath’s descendants and the priestly line that comes through Aaron.
Aaron’s sons are identified as Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. The priestly genealogy continues through Eleazar and his descendants, including Phinehas and later generations of priests.
The record eventually includes Azariah, who served as priest in the Temple Solomon built in Jerusalem.
The priestly line continues through many generations until Jehozadak, who is taken into captivity when the Lord allows Judah and Jerusalem to be carried away by Nebuchadnezzar.
