Deuteronomy Chapter 3 begins with Israel’s confrontation against Og, king of Bashan, one of the last remaining Rephaites, a people known for their great size and strength. As Israel advances toward Bashan, God tells Moses not to fear because He has already delivered Og, his army, and his kingdom into Israel’s hands. Trusting God’s promise, the Israelites completely defeat Og and capture all sixty fortified cities of Bashan. Every city is taken, leaving no survivors, and the land becomes part of Israel’s inheritance. Og’s enormous iron bed, measuring approximately thirteen feet long and six feet wide, is mentioned as evidence of his remarkable stature and the magnitude of God’s victory.
Following these victories, Moses reviews how the conquered lands east of the Jordan are distributed among the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh. Although these tribes receive their inheritance immediately, Moses reminds their fighting men that they must cross the Jordan alongside their fellow Israelites and help conquer the remainder of the Promised Land before returning to their families.
Moses then recalls encouraging Joshua, reminding him that the same God who defeated Sihon and Og would also defeat the kings west of the Jordan. The chapter concludes with one of the most emotional moments in Moses’ life. Moses pleads with God to allow him to cross the Jordan and enter the beautiful land promised to Israel. Instead, the Lord instructs Moses to climb Mount Pisgah, where he will be allowed to see the Promised Land with his own eyes but not enter it. God commands Moses to strengthen and encourage Joshua, who will lead Israel into the land that Moses longed to possess.
