1 Samuel Chapter 1 introduces a man named Elkanah, who lived in the hill country of Ephraim with his two wives, Hannah and Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah was unable to have any, which caused her great sadness and emotional pain.
Each year, Elkanah traveled with his family to Shiloh to worship and offer sacrifices to the Lord at the tabernacle. Although Elkanah loved Hannah deeply, Peninnah continually mocked and provoked her because she had no children. Hannah became overwhelmed with grief and often wept during these occasions.
During one visit to Shiloh, Hannah entered the tabernacle and prayed earnestly to God. In deep sorrow, she made a vow that if God would give her a son, she would dedicate him completely to the Lord’s service for all his life.
As Hannah prayed silently, Eli the priest watched her and mistakenly thought she was drunk because her lips moved without sound. Hannah respectfully explained that she was pouring out her soul before God in bitterness and sorrow. Realizing his mistake, Eli blessed her and prayed that God would grant her request.
Hannah left with renewed peace and faith. In time, God answered her prayer, and she gave birth to a son named Samuel, whose name means “heard by God.” Hannah recognized that Samuel was a gift from the Lord.
After Samuel was weaned, Hannah faithfully kept her promise. She brought young Samuel to the tabernacle at Shiloh and dedicated him to God’s service under Eli the priest. Hannah worshiped the Lord with gratitude and thanksgiving for His faithfulness.
