God reveals that He knew Jeremiah before he was formed in his mother’s womb. Before Jeremiah was born, God had already chosen and appointed him to be a prophet to the nations. This powerful statement demonstrates God’s sovereignty and purpose for Jeremiah’s life.
Jeremiah responds with hesitation and fear. He protests that he is too young and does not know how to speak effectively. However, God rejects Jeremiah’s excuse and commands him not to be afraid. The Lord promises that He will be with Jeremiah wherever He sends him and will protect him from his enemies.
God then reaches out and symbolically touches Jeremiah’s mouth, declaring that He has placed His words in the prophet’s mouth. Jeremiah’s authority would not come from his own wisdom but from the message God would give him.
The Lord explains Jeremiah’s mission using powerful imagery. He is appointed to uproot, tear down, destroy, and overthrow sinful nations and kingdoms, but also to build and plant. While much of Jeremiah’s ministry would involve warnings of judgment, it would also include promises of restoration and hope.
God then gives Jeremiah two visions. In the first vision, Jeremiah sees an almond branch. God explains that He is watching over His word to ensure that it is fulfilled. The almond tree was one of the first trees to blossom, symbolizing God’s alertness and faithfulness.
In the second vision, Jeremiah sees a boiling pot tipping from the north. God reveals that disaster will come from the north against Judah because the people have abandoned Him and worshiped false gods.
The chapter concludes with God encouraging Jeremiah to be courageous. Though kings, princes, priests, and people will oppose him, God promises to make Jeremiah like a fortified city, an iron pillar, and bronze walls. His enemies will fight against him, but they will not overcome him because God will be with him.
