Colossians Chapter 3 Summary

Jul 5, 2026 | Pauline Epistles, Colossians

Colossians Chapter 3 teaches believers how to live their new life in Jesus Christ. The Apostle Paul urges Christians to set their hearts and minds on heavenly things rather than earthly desires because they have died to sin and have been raised with Christ. He explains how believers should put away sinful behaviors, clothe themselves with Christlike virtues, and allow the peace and Word of Christ to govern every area of life. Ultimately, Colossians Chapter 3 reveals what a transformed life looks like when Jesus Christ is truly Lord.

Colossians Chapter 3 Summary

Paul begins by reminding believers that because they have been raised with Christ, they should seek the things that are above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Their true life is now hidden with Christ in God, and when Christ returns in glory, believers will also share in His glory.

Because of this new identity, Christians must put to death the sinful desires of their old nature. Paul specifically warns against sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires, greed, anger, rage, malice, slander, filthy language, and lying. These behaviors belong to the old life that has been left behind through faith in Christ.

Instead, believers are called to put on a new way of living that reflects the character of Jesus. Paul encourages them to clothe themselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, forgiveness, and above all, love, which perfectly binds all these virtues together in unity.

Paul teaches that the peace of Christ should rule in the hearts of believers, since they have been called together into one body. Gratitude should continually mark the Christian life as believers encourage one another through the Word of Christ, teaching, admonishing, and worshiping God with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs filled with thankfulness.

He gives one of the chapter’s greatest principles by declaring that whatever believers do—whether in word or deed—they should do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

Paul then applies these principles to everyday relationships within the Christian household. Wives are encouraged to respect their husbands, husbands to love their wives sacrificially, children to obey their parents, fathers to avoid discouraging their children, servants to work sincerely as though serving Christ, and masters to remember that they too serve the Lord in heaven.

Throughout the chapter, Paul emphasizes that every believer serves Christ above all earthly authorities. God shows no favoritism, and every Christian is accountable to Him for the way they live. The transformed life is demonstrated not only in worship but also in daily relationships, work, and service.

Colossians Chapter 3 teaches that believers who belong to Jesus Christ should continually grow in holiness, love, gratitude, and obedience. By fixing their minds on Christ and allowing His Word to dwell richly within them, Christians become living examples of God’s transforming grace to the world.
