Galatians Chapter 1 opens Paul’s passionate letter to the churches of Galatia. Unlike many of his other letters, Paul quickly addresses a serious problem: false teachers were spreading a different gospel and leading believers away from the truth of salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Paul defends the true Gospel and explains that his message came directly from God, not from human sources.
Galatians Chapter 1 Summary
Paul begins by identifying himself as an apostle, not appointed by human authority but by Jesus Christ and God the Father who raised Him from the dead.
He greets the churches of Galatia with grace and peace and reminds them that Jesus gave Himself for our sins to deliver us from this present evil world according to God’s will.
Immediately, Paul expresses astonishment that the Galatian believers are so quickly turning away from the Gospel they originally received. False teachers had persuaded them that faith in Christ alone was not enough and that additional requirements were necessary for salvation.
Paul firmly declares that there is only one true Gospel. Any message that adds to or changes the Gospel of Christ is a false gospel.
His warning is extremely strong:
“Though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you… let him be accursed.”
Paul emphasizes that he is not trying to please people but to serve Christ faithfully. The truth of the Gospel cannot be altered to gain human approval.
The apostle then explains the source of his message. The Gospel he preaches was not taught to him by human beings. Instead, it came through a direct revelation from Jesus Christ.
Paul reminds the Galatians of his former life in Judaism. Before his conversion, he fiercely persecuted the church and tried to destroy it. He was highly respected among his peers and was extremely devoted to Jewish traditions.
Yet God had a different plan for him.
Paul explains that God had chosen him before birth and called him by grace. When Christ was revealed to him, Paul immediately began proclaiming the Gospel among the Gentiles.
After his conversion, Paul did not immediately seek approval from the apostles in Jerusalem. Instead, he spent time in Arabia and later returned to Damascus.
Three years later, he visited Jerusalem and met Peter, staying with him for fifteen days. He also met James, the brother of Jesus.
Paul stresses that the churches of Judea barely knew him personally. They had only heard reports that the man who once persecuted Christians was now preaching the faith he had once tried to destroy.
As a result, believers glorified God because of the transformation that had taken place in Paul’s life.
Galatians Chapter 1 demonstrates the power of God’s grace, the importance of defending the true Gospel, and the life-changing impact of encountering Jesus Christ.
