Judges Chapter 4 tells the dramatic story of Deborah, Barak, and Jael as God delivers Israel from the oppression of King Jabin of Canaan and his powerful commander, Sisera. After Israel once again turns away from the Lord, the people suffer under Canaanite oppression for twenty years. God raises up Deborah, a prophetess and judge, to lead Israel and call Barak into battle. The chapter demonstrates God’s power to deliver His people through unexpected individuals and shows the importance of courage, faith, obedience, and trusting in God’s promises.
Judges Chapter 4 Summary
After the death of Ehud, the Israelites once again do evil in the sight of the Lord. As a result, God allows King Jabin of Canaan to oppress them. Jabin’s military commander, Sisera, possesses nine hundred iron chariots and cruelly oppresses Israel for twenty years. In desperation, the Israelites cry out to the Lord for help.
At this time, Deborah, a prophetess and judge, leads Israel. She summons Barak and tells him that the Lord commands him to gather ten thousand men from the tribes of Naphtali and Zebulun and march to Mount Tabor. God promises to draw Sisera and his army to the Kishon River and deliver them into Barak’s hands.
Barak agrees to go only if Deborah accompanies him. Deborah agrees but tells him that the honor of defeating Sisera will ultimately go to a woman.
Barak gathers his army at Mount Tabor. When Sisera hears of their movements, he assembles his nine hundred iron chariots and his entire army. Deborah tells Barak to advance because the Lord has already gone before him.
Barak and his men descend from Mount Tabor, and God throws Sisera’s forces into confusion. The entire Canaanite army is defeated, and Sisera abandons his chariot and escapes on foot.
Sisera flees to the tent of Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite, believing he will be safe. Jael welcomes him, gives him milk, and covers him with a blanket. Exhausted, Sisera falls asleep. Jael then takes a tent peg and hammer and kills him, fulfilling Deborah’s prophecy that a woman would receive the honor for Sisera’s defeat.
When Barak arrives searching for Sisera, Jael shows him the fallen commander. Israel continues growing stronger against King Jabin until he is completely destroyed.
