Mark Chapter 2 opens with Jesus returning to Capernaum, where a large crowd gathers to hear Him teach. Four men bring their paralyzed friend to Jesus, but finding no way through the crowd, they climb onto the roof, remove part of it, and lower the man before Him.
Seeing their remarkable faith, Jesus first declares that the man’s sins are forgiven. Some of the teachers of the law silently accuse Him of blasphemy, believing that only God can forgive sins. Knowing their thoughts, Jesus asks whether it is easier to say, “Your sins are forgiven,” or to command the man to walk.
To demonstrate His divine authority, Jesus tells the paralyzed man to rise, take up his mat, and go home. Immediately, the man is completely healed and walks out before the amazed crowd. Everyone glorifies God, recognizing that they have witnessed something extraordinary.
Later, Jesus calls Levi (Matthew), a tax collector, to become one of His disciples. Levi immediately leaves everything behind and follows Him. Jesus then shares a meal with many tax collectors and sinners, prompting criticism from the Pharisees.
When questioned about His association with sinners, Jesus explains that healthy people do not need a physician, but the sick do. He declares that He came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
The religious leaders also question why Jesus’ disciples do not fast like those of John the Baptist and the Pharisees. Jesus responds by comparing Himself to a bridegroom, explaining that a time of celebration is not a time for mourning. He then teaches that new wine requires new wineskins, illustrating that His kingdom brings a new covenant that cannot simply fit into old religious traditions.
Finally, Jesus’ disciples pick grain while walking through the fields on the Sabbath, leading to further criticism. Jesus reminds the Pharisees of David eating the consecrated bread when in need and teaches that the Sabbath was made for mankind, not mankind for the Sabbath.
The chapter concludes with Jesus making the profound declaration that the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath, affirming His divine authority over God’s holy day.
