Mark Chapter 5 presents three powerful demonstrations of Jesus Christ’s authority over forces that humanity cannot control: demons, chronic illness, and death. The chapter begins with Jesus delivering a demon-possessed man in the region of the Gerasenes. It then follows Jesus back across the Sea of Galilee, where Jairus desperately asks Him to heal his dying daughter. On the way, a woman who has suffered from bleeding for twelve years reaches out in faith and is healed.
Together, these events reveal Jesus as compassionate and sovereign. No spiritual power, physical disease, social rejection, or even death itself is beyond His authority. Mark 5 repeatedly contrasts overwhelming human desperation with the transforming power of faith in Christ.
Mark Chapter 5 Summary
Mark 5 begins after Jesus and His disciples cross the Sea of Galilee into the region of the Gerasenes.
Immediately, Jesus encounters a man possessed by an unclean spirit who lives among the tombs. The man’s condition is severe. People have attempted to restrain him with chains and shackles, but he repeatedly breaks them. He wanders among the tombs and hills in continual torment.
When the man sees Jesus, he runs toward Him.
Jesus commands the unclean spirit to leave him. When Jesus asks its name, the response is “Legion: for we are many.”
The demons beg Jesus not to send them away and ask permission to enter a nearby herd of pigs. Jesus permits them, and the unclean spirits enter the herd, which rushes down a steep slope into the sea.
When local people arrive, they discover the formerly possessed man sitting peacefully, clothed, and in his right mind.
Instead of celebrating, however, the frightened residents ask Jesus to leave their region.
As Jesus prepares to depart, the restored man asks to accompany Him. Jesus gives him a different mission: return home and tell others what the Lord has done for him and how He showed him mercy.
Jesus then crosses the sea again.
A synagogue leader named Jairus approaches Him and falls at His feet. Jairus’s young daughter is near death, and he desperately begs Jesus to come and heal her.
Jesus goes with him, surrounded by a large crowd.
Along the way, an adult woman who has suffered from bleeding for twelve years approaches Jesus. She has endured tremendous suffering, spent everything she had on treatments, and grown worse rather than better.
Believing that touching Jesus’ clothing will be enough to heal her, she reaches through the crowd and touches His garment.
Immediately, she is healed.
Jesus stops and asks who touched Him. The frightened woman eventually comes forward and tells Him the truth.
Rather than condemning her, Jesus responds with compassion and tells her that her faith has made her well. He sends her away in peace.
While Jesus is still speaking, messengers arrive from Jairus’s home with devastating news.
His daughter has died.
Jesus immediately tells Jairus:
“Be not afraid, only believe.”
Jesus continues to the house with Peter, James, and John. There He encounters mourning and commotion.
Jesus declares that the girl is not beyond His power and enters the room where she lies.
Taking her by the hand, Jesus says, “Talitha cumi,” meaning, “Little girl, I say unto thee, arise.”
Immediately, she rises and walks.
Those present are overwhelmed with amazement.
Mark Chapter 5 therefore moves from a man trapped by demonic oppression, to a woman suffering from an incurable condition, to a family confronting death itself.
In every situation, Jesus demonstrates complete authority and extraordinary compassion.
