As Naomi and Ruth settled in Bethlehem, Ruth sought a way to provide food for herself and Naomi. Following the custom of the Law, she went into the fields to glean leftover grain behind the harvesters.
By God’s providence, Ruth found herself working in a field belonging to Boaz, a wealthy and respected man who was a relative of Naomi’s deceased husband, Elimelech.
Boaz arrived from Bethlehem and greeted his workers with a blessing from the Lord. Noticing Ruth among the gleaners, he asked his servants about her identity.
The overseer explained that Ruth was the Moabite woman who had returned with Naomi from Moab. He also reported her diligence and hard work throughout the day.
Boaz approached Ruth and instructed her to remain in his fields rather than seeking grain elsewhere. He promised her protection and directed his workers not to harm or trouble her.
Overwhelmed by his kindness, Ruth bowed before him and asked why he had shown favor to a foreigner like her.
Boaz explained that he had heard about her loyalty to Naomi and her willingness to leave her homeland to care for her mother-in-law. He prayed that the Lord would reward her for trusting under His wings.
At mealtime, Boaz invited Ruth to eat with his workers. He generously provided food for her, and she ate until she was satisfied.
Boaz then instructed his workers to allow Ruth to gather grain freely and even leave extra stalks behind for her to collect.
By the end of the day, Ruth had gathered a large amount of barley and brought it home to Naomi. Naomi was amazed and asked where Ruth had worked.
When Ruth revealed that the field belonged to Boaz, Naomi rejoiced. She explained that Boaz was one of their kinsman-redeemers, a relative who could help preserve their family line and inheritance.
The chapter concludes with Ruth continuing to glean in Boaz’s fields throughout the barley and wheat harvests while remaining with Naomi.
