Ruth Chapter 1 Summary
Ruth Chapter 1 opens during the time of the judges when a severe famine affects the land of Israel. A man named Elimelech leaves Bethlehem with his wife Naomi and their two sons, Mahlon and Chilion, to live temporarily in the land of Moab.
While living in Moab, Elimelech dies, leaving Naomi alone with her sons. The two sons later marry Moabite women named Orpah and Ruth. After about ten years, both Mahlon and Chilion also die, leaving Naomi, Ruth, and Orpah widowed and without protection or support.
Naomi hears that the famine in Israel has ended and decides to return to Bethlehem. As the women begin the journey, Naomi encourages Ruth and Orpah to remain in Moab and return to their families. Naomi feels broken by sorrow and believes her life has become bitter because of her losses.
Orpah tearfully says goodbye and returns home, but Ruth refuses to leave Naomi. Ruth makes one of the most famous declarations of loyalty in the Bible, promising to stay beside Naomi wherever she goes. Ruth tells Naomi that Naomi’s people will become her people and Naomi’s God will become her God.
Moved by Ruth’s devotion, Naomi allows her to continue the journey to Bethlehem. When they arrive, the people of Bethlehem are stirred by Naomi’s return. Naomi asks to be called “Mara,” meaning bitter, because of the grief and suffering she has experienced.
The chapter ends with Naomi and Ruth arriving in Bethlehem at the beginning of the barley harvest, setting the stage for God’s future provision and blessing.
