1 Kings Chapter 1 Summary
1 Kings Chapter 1 opens with King David in old age, weak and unable to keep warm. His servants bring a young woman named Abishag to care for him and attend to his needs during his final days.
As David grows weaker, his son Adonijah begins exalting himself and preparing to take the throne. Like his older brother Absalom before him, Adonijah gathers chariots, horsemen, and supporters to strengthen his claim as king. Important leaders such as Joab and Abiathar the priest join him.
However, Adonijah does not invite Solomon, Nathan the prophet, Zadok the priest, or David’s mighty men to his feast and public declaration. Nathan realizes that Adonijah’s actions threaten God’s plan for Solomon to become king.
Nathan goes to Bathsheba, Solomon’s mother, and advises her to remind David of his promise that Solomon would reign after him. Bathsheba approaches David and explains that Adonijah has already declared himself king while many people remain unaware.
Nathan then enters and confirms Bathsheba’s report. David responds quickly by publicly declaring Solomon as the rightful king of Israel. He commands Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah to place Solomon on David’s mule and anoint him king at Gihon.
The people rejoice loudly as Solomon is anointed. Trumpets sound throughout Jerusalem, and the celebration shakes the city. When Adonijah and his guests hear the noise, they realize Solomon has officially become king.
Fearful for his life, Adonijah runs to the altar and grabs its horns seeking mercy. Solomon chooses to spare him for the moment, warning that he must prove himself worthy and faithful.
