Ruth Chapter 3 Summary

Jun 28, 2026 | History, Ruth

Ruth Chapter 3 is a beautiful account of faith, humility, and redemption. Following Naomi’s guidance, Ruth approaches Boaz at the threshing floor and humbly requests that he fulfill the role of her kinsman-redeemer. Boaz responds with integrity, kindness, and honor, demonstrating the godly character that makes him a picture of Jesus Christ, humanity’s ultimate Redeemer. This chapter highlights God’s providence working quietly behind the scenes as He prepares to restore Naomi’s family and continue the lineage that would ultimately lead to King David and Jesus Christ.

Ruth Chapter 3 Summary

After witnessing Boaz’s generosity toward Ruth during the barley harvest, Naomi seeks to secure a permanent future for her faithful daughter-in-law. She instructs Ruth to wash, anoint herself, and put on her best clothing before going to the threshing floor where Boaz will be winnowing barley that evening. Naomi carefully explains that Ruth should wait until Boaz has finished eating and sleeping before quietly uncovering his feet and lying there. Ruth humbly agrees to follow Naomi’s instructions.

During the night, Boaz suddenly awakens and is startled to find a woman lying at his feet. When he asks who she is, Ruth answers, “I am your servant Ruth. Spread the corner of your garment over me, since you are a guardian-redeemer of our family.” Rather than a romantic gesture, Ruth’s request is a respectful appeal for Boaz to fulfill his legal responsibility as a kinsman-redeemer by marrying her and preserving the family line.

Boaz praises Ruth for her noble character, recognizing that she has not pursued younger men but has acted with wisdom and selflessness. He gladly expresses his willingness to redeem her but explains that there is another man who is an even closer relative and therefore has the first legal right to act as redeemer. Boaz promises that if the closer relative refuses, he himself will certainly redeem her.

To protect Ruth’s reputation, Boaz instructs her to remain until morning before quietly returning home before daylight. Before she leaves, he fills her cloak with six measures of barley, sending her back to Naomi with a generous gift as a sign of his good intentions and continued provision.

When Ruth returns home, Naomi eagerly asks how everything unfolded. After hearing Boaz’s response and receiving the barley, Naomi confidently assures Ruth that Boaz will not rest until the matter is settled that very day.

Ruth Chapter 3 beautifully illustrates biblical redemption. Boaz serves as a powerful foreshadowing of Jesus Christ, who willingly redeems those who come to Him in faith, humility, and trust. The chapter reminds believers that God’s timing is perfect and that His plans often unfold through quiet acts of faithfulness rather than dramatic events.
