By obeying the Lord, Israel will demonstrate wisdom and understanding before the surrounding nations, who will recognize the greatness of Israel’s God and the righteousness of His laws.
Moses warns the people never to forget what they witnessed at Mount Horeb. They heard God’s voice from the fire but saw no physical form. Because of this, Israel must not create idols in the image of humans, animals, birds, or anything else in creation. They must also resist worshiping the sun, moon, and stars.
Moses reminds Israel that God brought them out of Egypt to become His special people. He also acknowledges that because of his own disobedience, he will not cross the Jordan into the Promised Land. He warns the Israelites that if they turn to idolatry, they will eventually be scattered among the nations.
