Daniel Chapter 3 begins with King Nebuchadnezzar constructing an enormous golden image on the plain of Dura in Babylon. Officials, governors, rulers, judges, and people from every nation are summoned to its dedication. A royal decree commands everyone to bow down and worship the image whenever they hear the sound of musical instruments. Anyone who refuses will immediately be thrown into a blazing furnace.
While nearly everyone obeys the king’s command, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego remain standing. Their loyalty to the God of Israel is greater than their fear of death. Certain Babylonian officials quickly report their disobedience to Nebuchadnezzar.
Filled with rage, the king summons the three Hebrews and offers them one final opportunity to worship the golden image. They respectfully but boldly refuse, declaring that the God they serve is able to rescue them from the fiery furnace. Nebuchadnezzar orders the furnace to be heated seven times hotter than usual. The flames become so intense that the soldiers carrying the three men are killed by the fire before reaching its opening. Bound tightly, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego fall into the furnace.
Moments later, Nebuchadnezzar is astonished. Instead of seeing three men consumed by the flames, he sees four figures walking freely inside the furnace, completely unharmed. The fourth figure appears “like a son of the gods,” and many believers understand this to be a pre-incarnate appearance of Jesus Christ or a powerful manifestation of God’s divine presence.
The king calls the three men out of the furnace. Not a hair on their heads is singed, their clothing is untouched, and they do not even smell of smoke. Witnessing this undeniable miracle, Nebuchadnezzar praises the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. He issues a new decree forbidding anyone from speaking against their God and promotes the three faithful men to even greater positions in Babylon.
