Deuteronomy Chapter 2 Summary
Moses reminded the Israelites that after many years wandering in the wilderness, God instructed them to turn northward. The generation that had rebelled against God at Kadesh-barnea had passed away, fulfilling the Lord’s judgment.
As Israel traveled, God commanded them not to provoke the descendants of Esau in the land of Seir because He had already given that territory to Esau’s descendants as their inheritance. The Israelites were instructed to purchase food and water rather than take anything by force.
The Lord also directed Israel to avoid conflict with the Moabites, descendants of Lot, because God had given them the land of Ar as their possession.
Later, the Israelites passed near the territory of the Ammonites. Again, God commanded them not to harass or fight against them because their land had also been given to the descendants of Lot.
Throughout these journeys, Moses emphasized how God had blessed Israel during the forty years in the wilderness. Their needs had been provided for, and nothing essential had been lacking.
Eventually, God instructed Israel to confront Sihon, king of Heshbon, an Amorite ruler. Moses first sent messengers offering peaceful passage through the land. However, God allowed Sihon’s heart to become stubborn so that Israel would defeat him and possess his territory.
Sihon gathered his army and marched against Israel. The Lord delivered the Amorites into Israel’s hands, and the Israelites won a decisive victory. They captured numerous cities and took possession of the land from the Arnon River to Jabbok.
This victory marked the beginning of Israel’s conquest of the land God had promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
Deuteronomy Chapter 2 demonstrates God’s faithfulness, His sovereign control over nations, and His ability to give victory to those who trust and obey Him.
